More than 90% of California's vernal pools have already been lost. Vernal pools are a valuable and increasingly threatened ecosystem, often smaller than the bulldozer that threatens to destroy them. In addition, birds such as egrets, ducks, and hawks use vernal pools as a seasonal source of food and water. Many of these plants and animals spend the dry season as seeds, eggs, or cysts, and then grow and reproduce when the ponds are again filled with water. The unique environment of vernal pools provides habitat for numerous rare plants and animals that are able to survive and thrive in these harsh conditions.

By early summer, the water has evaporated, and the clay pools appear brown, barren, and cracked. In the spring, wildflowers often bloom in brilliant circles of color that follow the receding shoreline of the pools. Today it is used more broadly to include other small ephemeral wetlands found country-wide. The term vernal pool originally referred only to small, intermittently filled wetlands found in the Mediterranean-type climate of the western United States. In years of drought, some pools may not fill at all.

During a single season, pools may fill and dry several times. The pools collect water during winter and spring rains, changing in volume in response to varying weather patterns. Beneath vernal pools lies either bedrock or a hard clay layer in the soil that helps keep water in the pool.Ĭlimatic changes associated with each season cause dramatic changes in the appearance of vernal pools. Western vernal pools are sometimes connected to each other by small drainages known as vernal swales, forming complexes. These wetlands range in size from small puddles to shallow lakes and are usually found in a gently sloping plain of grassland.

They are covered by shallow water for variable periods from winter to spring, but may be completely dry for most of the summer and fall. Vernal pools are seasonal depressional wetlands that occur under the Mediterranean climate conditions of the West Coast and in glaciated areas of northeastern and midwestern states. Washed in by the waves, these organisms nourish the smallest animals, which, in turn, sustain the larger ones.Vernal pools vary size and are ponded only during the wetter part of the year. Every wave at every high tide delivers fresh nutrients and microscopic organisms, such as plankton, to support and replenish the pool’s intricate food chain. The space in a tide pool may be limited, but the food there is plentiful. In fact, researchers are trying to figure out if and how it can be harvested or reproduced for commercial use. This natural substance is among the most powerful glues known to exist. Barnacles, for example, produce a fast-curing cement that lets them stay put. To survive in this rugged environment, tide pool inhabitants often cling very tightly to any rock to which they can adhere. At high tide, the pool’s plants and animals are bathed in fresh seawater, but must endure the pounding of crashing waves and foraging fish with temporary access to the shoreline. While these small basins at the ocean’s edge typically range from mere inches to a few feet deep and a few feet across, they are packed with sturdy sea life such as snails, barnacles, mussels, anemones, urchins, sea stars, crustaceans, seaweed, and small fish.Īs ocean water retreats outside the tide pool during low tide, the resident marine life must endure hours exposed to the sun, low oxygen, increasing water temperature, and predators such as wading birds that specialize in dining in these shallow pools.
